What is Atenolol?
Atenolol 50MG is a popular drug to reduce workload on the heart and to make the heart beat regularly. This drug is very effective to treat the high blood pressure patient and to stop their chest pain. Atenolol is used to protect the patient during heart attack. Not only it works in the time of heart attack but also it prevents additional heart attack from occurring. Also it helps to reduce hypertension.
Description
Atenolol 50 mg is a drug from the group of beta blockers. Beta blockers or ß-blockers are a group or class of drugs used mostly in cardiovascular or heart diseases. In the year of 1976 this medicine was developed as an alternate for propranolol which was used for the treatment of hypertension. This medicine works by slowing down the heart beat and also reduces heart’s workload. Usually it does not pass through the blood-brain barrier like propranolol, Atenolol. This is the reason why Atenolol is used to avoid various central nervous system side effects.
Indications
Atenolol 50 mg is used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and sometimes used in conditions such as hypertension, coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, and angina or chest pain. It is an effective medicine to reduce the risk of heart attack or complications following myocardial infarction. Atenolol is used for the treatment of the symptoms of Graves Disease. For the hydrophilic properties, Atenolol is less suitable in migraine prophylaxis compared to the medicine “propranolol”. ATENOLOL is indicated in patients with mild or moderate hypertension.
Being a cardioselective drug Atenolol exerts better blocking action on myocardial ß1-receptors than on ß2 ones in the lung. The beta 2 receptors are responsible to keep the bronchial system open. If beta 2 receptors are blocked, it can result bronchospasm with serious lack of oxygen in the patient's body. For the cardioselective properties, the risk of bronchospastic reactions is reduced if atenolol is used in comparison to other nonselective drugs as propranolol. But this may also be encountered with Atenolol if the doses are high. Atenolol is given with extreme caution to asthma patients, who are mainly at risk. For the asthma patient the drug dose should be low. Incase of the occurrence of asthma attack, the inhalation of a beta2-mimetic antiasthmatic, such as hexoprenaline or salbutamol, will usually hold back the symptoms.
Doses
It is recommended that Atenolol should be taken before meals or at bedtime. To treat angina or high blood pressure the dose may be is 50 mg once daily.
